It’s spring and with it comes the myriad of articles and posts about how to be the perfect hostess for all your upcoming parties. Everyone has their list of essentials. However…. there’s just one thing you have to have.
You can mop your floors and clean your windows in preparation for guests, but you don’t have to. You can light a floral smelling candle, but you don’t have to. You can design a live branch centerpiece, but you don’t have to. You can learn to make the perfect quiche and macarons, but you don’t have to. You can serve a cocktail with a flower on top, but you don’t have to.
The only thing you have to have to host a party this spring is an open heart. Maybe that sounds cheesy or maybe that sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. When you have an open heart about your home, people can tell. They’ll notice that you made them gluten free dishes because of their dietary restrictions. They’ll notice that you want to know all about that last doctors appointment that you remembered was last week. They’ll notice that you pulled out the few picture books and old toys for their kids. They’ll notice your invitation to relax and be themselves. No matter the state of your home or the menu served, they will remember that you wanted them there, that you honest to goodness cared about them.
So put away the grand hostess plans. Turn down the expectations. Order a pizza and invite someone for dinner. It will refresh both of you more than you know.
